Last month Tina Fey weighed in the The New Yorker with an excerpt from her recently released semi-memoir Bossypants that she was struggling to decide whether or not to have a second child. I’m sure when she wrote the piece she was ambivalent, but when the piece came out and spurred a conversation about working moms and the entertainment she was clearly already pregnant since she announced yesterday that she is five months pregnant.
I am happy for her and her growing family but it’s a bit bizarre that on the same day her pregnancy news gets released Alec Baldwin is out there talking about how 30 Rock will end next year and that Tina Fey is going to start writing and directing movies. He also said she’s going to be the next Elaine May and while most people, especially young ones, don’t know who the hell Elaine May is, those of us who know who she is know that while she is a great talent, her directing career is not one that anyone wants to emulate.
I know that Tina was and I’m sure is still concerned about how her pregnancy and the fact that she will have two kids will reflect on her ability to be as busy a writer, producer and actor that she is now. She seems to wake up in the middle of the night concerned for her staff. I love that about her. But I also think that it’s not fair. I know that 30 Rock has lasted longer than anyone including me expected, but let’s figure out a way for a woman to be creatively successful and am mom. Then maybe all the young women won’t be talking about how much they worry about having a family and a job. This is an opportunity for others to step up and figure it out cause it would be a damn shame if the show stopped running because Tina got knocked up cause we know that this would never even be an issue if the creator of 30 Rock were a dude.
