Tina Fey’s Production Company Signs First-Look Deal with Universal

Tina Fey’s production company, Little Stranger, has made a first-look deal with Universal. The studio just released “Sisters,” Fey’s most recent film with long-time collaborator Amy Poehler.

Fey expressed her excitement about the deal, saying that Universal had “proven to be such a great home for comedy.” No wonder, with “Sisters” having succeeded in becoming the real sleeper hit of the holiday period, and grossing over $100 million worldwide despite being in competition with the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” behemoth. The film, which Fey produced and Poehler executive produced, was made on a modest budget of $30 million.

Little Stranger has several noteworthy women-centric projects in the works, including the Paula Pell-penned “Do Nothing Bitches,” which teams Fey with former UFC champion Ronda Rousey. Then there’s the planned movie about three female friends who aim to use some newfound card-counting skills to get themselves out of financial straits. The script, based on a “Good Housekeeping” article by Ruth Palmer, will be written by Sarah Heyward (“Girls”).

Universal chairman Donna Langley said of the Little Stranger deal: “With her trademark wit, unparalleled voice and business acumen, Tina has found success on nearly every platform — both in front of and behind the camera. We are thrilled to continue our relationship with her team and develop projects that entertain global audiences.” Langley went on to describe Fey as “a comedic icon whose fearless commitment to her craft has made her one of the entertainment industry’s most in-demand talents. We could not be more fortunate now that we are able to call Universal her home.”
