Toni Collette Will Star in Netflix’s “Pieces of Her” Series Adaptation

Collette in "Unbelievable": Beth Dubber/Netflix

Toni Collette is joining another Netflix series. She’ll follow up her Golden Globe-nominated role in “Unbelievable” with “Pieces of Her,” an adaptation of Karin Slaughter’s 2018 best-selling novel. Deadline broke the news.

Penned by Charlotte Stoudt, “Pieces of Her” is set in a “sleepy Georgia town where a random act of violence sets off an unexpected chain of events for 30-year-old Andy Oliver and her mother Laura (Collette),” the source summarizes. “Desperate for answers, Andy embarks on a dangerous journey across America, drawing her towards the dark, hidden heart of her family.”

“Lovely, empathetic, modest – at first glance, Collette’s Laura Oliver seems to be the perfect Southern woman, devoted to her work as a speech pathologist and to her disaffected daughter, Andy,” Deadline hints. “But when the ghosts of Laura’s past put her life in jeopardy, we discover there is more to Laura than meets the eye.”

Minkie Spiro, who received a DGA nom for her work on “Fosse/Verdon,” will direct the eight-episode dramatic thriller. “Dead To Me,” “Barry,” and “The Deuce” are among her other credits.

Stoudt, who is also a “Fosse/Verdon” alumna, will serve as showrunner on “Pieces of Her.” Her other credits include “House of Cards” and “Homeland.” She, Lesli Linka Glatter, and Bruna Papandrea among the project’s exec producers.

Collette won a Golden Globe and Emmy for her lead role on “The United States of Tara,” which ran for three reasons on Showtime. She received an Oscar nod in 2000 for “The Sixth Sense.” “Knives Out,” “Velvet Buzzsaw,” and “Hereditary” are among her more recent film credits. The former, a murder mystery, is in theaters now.

“I think if we women are loud and persistent enough, things will change for the better,” Collette has said of her industry. “We all need to see ourselves reflected and understood [on screen], rather than just seeing some middle-aged white guy.”
