Tiler Peck sets out to prove that “ballet isn’t just pink tights and a tutu” in an upcoming Hulu documentary. “Ballet Now” sees New York City Ballet’s Prima Ballerina curating the Music Center’s famed BalletNOW program — the first woman to ever do so. “I’ve never done anything like this so it’s way out of my comfort zone,” she admits in a new trailer for the doc.
Tiler is putting together 15 performances that fuse together different styles including tap, hip-hop, clown artistry, and ballet. She has less than a week to pull off the incredibly ambitious undertaking, and the pressure is high. “It feels very important to be a woman in charge of this show in a dance world run by men,” she says. “This is a first. I’m just hoping that it all doesn’t come crashing down.”
A number of well-received dance docs have come out in recent years, including Misty Copeland portrait “A Ballerina’s Tale,” Elvira Lind’s Tribeca winner “Bobbi Jene,” and Linda Saffire and Adam Schlesinger’s “Restless Creature: Wendy Whelan.”
“Ballet Now” premieres July 20 on Netflix. Elisabeth Moss is among the project’s executive producers.
