Trailer Watch: A Child Sues His Parents in Nadine Labaki’s Cannes Winner “Capernaum”

"Capernaum"

An Oscar hopeful in the Best Foreign Language Film category,  Nadine Labaki’s “Capernaum” already took home the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes Film Festival. A new trailer has dropped for the drama about a Lebanese boy (Zain al Rafeea) who takes his parents to court, suing them for bringing him into a world of pain and suffering. Asked what he wants of his parents, Zain says he wants them to “stop having children.”

The trailer reveals very little of the film’s plot, but it includes footage of Zain fleeing from his dysfunctional family and home and finding refuge at an amusement park. It’s there that he meets Rahil (Yordanos Shiferaw), an Ethiopian refugee who reluctantly agrees to give him shelter along with her baby son.

Labaki is among “Capernaum’s” writers. Her other writing and directing credits include “Caramel” and “¿Y ahora adónde vamos?”

Lebanon has submitted “Capernaum” for consideration in the foreign language Oscar race. The film opens in select theaters December 14.
