“It’s beautiful for the most part, but it comes at a cost,” Gently James (Xosha Roquemore, “The Mindy Project”) says of the connection she shares with Evan Fisher (Alano Miller, “Jane the Virgin”). The couple and their love are the focus of “Cherish the Day.” A trailer for Ava DuVernay’s OWN anthology just dropped. Each season follows a couple in love, with each episode taking place over a single day of their relationship. Gently and Evan’s story makes up Season 1.
“He’s sweet, he’s honest. I’ve never met somebody who’s so easy to be with,” Gently says of Evan in the spot. Evan is just as smitten, mentioning that “there’s something about [Gently]” that he’s never encountered before.
But it seems that their love might not be enough to keep them together. The trailer suggests there’s a significant class difference between Fishers and the Jameses. Evan’s mother doesn’t approve of Gently and Gently’s dad warns his daughter to “keep [her] guard up” around Evan’s family. “They different people than us,” he stresses.
“Cherish the Day,” which has reached full gender parity, is created by DuVernay. She also serves as executive producer on the series, as does Oprah Winfrey. They two have previously collaborated on DuVernay’s OWN family drama, “Queen Sugar,” and her Exonerated Five miniseries, “When They See Us.” Winfrey has appeared in DuVernay’s films “A Wrinkle in Time” and “Selma.”
With “A Wrinkle in Time,” DuVernay became the first woman of color to helm a live-action with a $100 million-plus budget. Her upcoming television gigs include directing and exec producing a pilot based on DC’s “DMZ” comics for HBO Max and developing a woman-driven union drama for TNT.
“Cherish the Day” will have a two-night premiere February 11 and 12 on OWN. Cicely Tyson also stars.
