Two Indigenous women living vastly different lives cross paths in a new trailer for “The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open.” Written and directed by Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers and Kathleen Hepburn, the drama sees Rosie (Violet Nelson) and Áila (Tailfeathers) meeting for the first time on a sidewalk in East Vancouver, British Columbia, under terrifying circumstances. The former is crying and wounded, while her abusive boyfriend shouts at her from afar. “He’s not usually like that,” Rosie insists. “He can be good, too.”
Áila takes Rosie, who is pregnant, out of the rain and urges her to call someone — “someone who knows about this kind of stuff.” After insisting that she can look out for herself, Rosie becomes resentful of Áila. “You think you’re better than me,” she observes.
Check out the trailer to see how Áila responds to the accusation.
Tailfeathers’ directing credits include doc “c’sna?m: The city before the city.” Hepburn made her feature debut with 2017’s “Never Steady, Never Still.”
“The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open” debuted at the Berlinale earlier this year and is slated to make its LA premiere this month at AFI Fest on November 19. You can catch the pic on Netflix beginning November 27. NY and LA theatrical dates will be announced soon.
