A silverback gorilla dreams of reuniting with his sister in a new trailer for Thea Sharrock’s “The One and Only Ivan.” Based on Katherine Applegate’s Newbery Medal-winning novel, the Disney+ pic sees Ivan (Sam Rockwell), who is 400 pounds, sharing a communal habitat in a shopping mall with an elephant and other animals. He’s lived in a cage since being captured in the jungle.
A budding friendship with Ruby (Brooklynn Prince), a baby elephant who has recently been separated from her family in the wild, inspires Ivan to question his own history and future. He’d love to reconnect with his sister, but he can’t remember where she is. “Memories never leave us. They just get out of reach,” he’s told.
Convinced that the Ruby needs to be in the wild where she can be free, Ivan begins using art to communicate his desire to return to the jungle and seemingly take the baby elephant with him. “This painting is clearly a sign he wants to be free,” an on-air reporter tells viewers.
“The One and Only Ivan” launches on Disney+ August 14. The pic marks Sharrock’s follow-up to Emilia Clarke-starrer “Me Before You,” her 2016 feature directorial debut. Sharrock’s small screen credits include “Call the Midwife” and “The Hollow Crown.”
