After her mother’s death, the titular character in “Sophie Jones” has a hard time of it, and she doesn’t really know what, if anything, will help her feel better. “At least I’ve been coping well. I mean, I haven’t been cutting myself or drinking or taking drugs, so that’s cool. I think,” she says, only half-jokingly, in the coming-of-age drama’s new trailer.
Sophie isn’t self-harming or self-medicating, but she does seem to be struggling. She can’t decide whether she wants to be around other people or not, and her grief has been “weird.” “Panic attacks happen, right?” she deadpans. “You know?”
On top of everything else, Sophie’s also dealing with the usual teen fare: she’s discovering her sexuality, looking ahead to college, and experiencing drama with her family and friends.
Inspired by a true story, “Sophie Jones” is a collaboration between director Jessie Barr and her cousin, Jessica Barr. The latter stars as Sophie and wrote the script with Jessie. Nicole Holofcener (“Enough Said”) executive produced.
“Sophie Jones” hits virtual cinemas and VOD March 2.
