A declining movie star heads to a healing retreat and begins to doubt her own identity in “She Will.” A trailer for the psychological horror pic, which landed director Charlotte Colbert the Golden Leopard for Best First Film at the Locarno Film Festival, introduces us to Veronica (Alice Krige, “The OA”), who travels to rural Scotland with her nurse (Kota Eberhardt, “X-Men: Dark Phoenix”) following a difficult surgery.
“I’m having dark thoughts,” Veronica reveals. While processing trauma she’s endured on movie sets, she’s told that “the earth is thought to have healing properties from the women who were burned as witches.” The wilderness ultimately “gives Veronica the power to enact revenge,” the film’s synopsis hints.
“She Will” is described as a “timely feminist critique” with “#MeToo resonance.” In her director’s statement, Colbert says it is “about revenge, the power of nature, the unconscious, the way we carry within us the muscle memory of all those who came before and all those who will come after.”
You can catch the pic in select theaters and on demand July 15. Colbert wrote the script with Kitty Percy.
