Trailer Watch: A Nine-Year-Old Girl Flees Nazi Germany in Caroline Link’s “When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit”

"When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit"

Oscar-winning filmmaker Caroline Link explores Hitler’s rise through the eyes of a nine-year-old girl in “When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit.” Based on Judith Kerr’s international bestseller, the period drama is set in 1933 Berlin and sees Anna’s (Riva Krymalowski) family fleeing Germany when her father mysteriously vanishes.

“There’s a bright light burning in your heart,” Anna is told in a new trailer for the film. “Protect it! Don’t let anyone blow it out.” That bright light is put to the test when Anna is forced to leave her former life behind and adapt to an unfamiliar land as a refugee. “I’m so afraid at the moment,” she admits. As one character explains, “You don’t go into exile for fun. You miss the country of your childhood. You miss the people. You miss the language.”

Link’s “Nowhere in Africa” won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2003 and she also received a nod in the category for 1998’s “Beyond Silence.” The category has since been renamed Best International Feature Film. “All About Me” and “Morocco” are among Link’s other features.

Penned by Link and Anna Brüggemann, “When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit” opens May 21 in NY and LA with additional cities to follow.
