Trailer Watch: A Secret Romance Is Revealed in France’s Oscar Pick “Two of Us”

"Two of Us"

A decades-long love affair takes a tragic turn in “Two of Us,” France’s submission for Best International Film at next year’s Oscars. A new trailer for the drama introduces us to Nina (Barbara Sukowa) and Mado (Martine Chevallier), a long-term couple who spend their days dancing in the kitchen, cuddling in bed, and planning a move to Rome. But no one else knows about the retired women’s romantic relationship. Nina and Mado live in the same building, but not the same apartment unit, and everyone, including Mado’s family, thinks they are just neighbors and friends.

Frustrated by their inability to live and love freely, Nina pressures Mado to tell her children the truth about their romance. Though she promises to tell them the very next day, Mado has a stroke before she gets the chance to. She may never speak again.

Tensions rise as Nina is shut out of Mado’s recovery process by her children. “She lied to you for 20 years. I’m her true love,” she announces.

“Two of Us” arrives in theaters and on demand February 5.
