A trailer has been released for multiple Independent Spirit Awards nominee “She’s Lost Control.”
We were enthralled by Helen Hunt’s performance as a sex surrogate in 2012’s “The Sessions,” so we’re intrigued by Anja Marquardt’s feature directorial debut, which portrays a graduate student, Ronah (Brooke Bloom), who also works as a sex surrogate.
“What we’re trying to do here is help you, so when you meet someone special in your real life, you can make it work out,” a character who appears to be Ronah’s boss explains to a potential client.
The trailer reveals that the line dividing the sessions and “real life” may be more blurry than what’s being acknowledged when Ronah and a client who “has sustained problems with intimacy” strike an intense sexual and emotional connection that is further complicated by his violent tendencies.
In an interview with Women and Hollywood Marquardt explained what inspired her to tell Ronah’s story: “When writing the script, the basic grid of the story was clear very early on. I was curious to explore exactly how strong, self-sufficient, insightful, and courageous someone like Ronah needs to be in order to teach their clients how to be intimate. It’s really a position of power that she’s in, but at the same time it’s very vulnerable. I became interested in looking at what she is going through, and what she’s getting out of it — something essential that her profession is giving her. She’s a surrogate partner, but at the same time her work is a substitute for something else in her life that’s missing.”
“She’s Lost Control” hits theaters March 20.
