A gifted singer finds herself on the brink of fame and fortune in “Beauty.” After signing a lucrative record contract, Beauty (Gracie Marie Bradley, “Grown-ish”) can’t stop thinking about the future, and specifically “touring, photoshoots, freedom.” A trailer for the Lena Waithe-penned Netflix pic, which is set in the ’80s, suggests that the performer’s mother (Niecy Nash, “Claws”) is less optimistic about what’s in store for Beauty. “Do you know what they do to stars? They build you up just so they can tear you down,” she tells her daughter, who is queer. She doesn’t want to send Beauty out in the world “to be eaten by wolves.”
“I just want to use the gift God gave me,” says Beauty. Her mom is convinced that she “won’t be real,” and will become “a fantasy.”
Waithe made history at the 2017 Emmys when she became the first Black woman to win Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for her work on “Master of None.” Her small screen credits include “The Chi” and “Twenties,” both of which she created. She penned “Queen & Slim,” Melina Matsoukas’ feature directorial debut about a Black couple who go on the run after killing a white cop in self-defense.
“Beauty” recently premiered at Tribeca Film Festival. The drama hits Netflix June 29. Sharon Stone (“The Flight Attendant”) co-stars.
