A trailer has landed for “Night Comes On,” Jordana Spiro’s award-winning feature debut about a 17-year-old on a mission. Recently released from juvenile detention, Angel (Dominique Fishback, “The Deuce”) celebrates her freedom by embarking on a journey to avenge her mother’s death. Along the way, she reluctantly agrees to let her 10-year-old sister (Tatum Marilyn Hall) join her.
“She used to say that the cars at night could sound like the ocean,” says Angel, likely referring to her mother. “You squeeze your eyes tight enough, you can almost see the sun. Problem is, it don’t work if your eyes are always wide open.” Angel’s eyes are wide open. If her determination to find her father is any indication, he had something to do with her mother’s death, and that’s a wrong Angel refuses to close her eyes to.
“I wanted to create a story with a strong female protagonist who was in the midst of an existential crisis,” Spiro told us. “At the same time I was volunteering with an incredible organization called Peace4Kids that provides a safe community for foster youth to grow and discover their greatness. I learned so much about resilience and bravery amidst trauma through these young people.” She added, “Because that background was not my own, it was imperative to collaborate with a writer who could understand the uniqueness of this background firsthand. Once I began co-writing with Angelica Nwandu — whom I met through P4K — the script came to life.”
Best known as an actress, Spiro’s on-screen credits include “Ozark,” “Blindspot,” and “The Good Wife.” She previously directed shorts “Skin,” “Exit the Castle,” and “The Off Track.”
“Night Comes On” made its world premiere in January at Sundance, where Spiro took home the NEXT Innovator Award. The drama hits theaters August 3.
