Trailer Watch: A Teen’s Disappearance Uncovers Darkness in “Knives and Skin”

"Knives and Skin"

Carolyn Harper (Raven Whitley) has gone missing. A new trailer for “Knives and Skin” explores what happens after the teen disappears. Described as “part suburban nightmare, part neon-soaked teenage fever dream,” Jennifer Reeder’s mystery sees Carolyn’s small Midwestern town struggling to make sense of what happened to her.

“Better by far you should forget and smile than you should remember and be sad,” an English teacher quoting Christina Rossetti’s “Remember” advises. The poem also hints at “darkness and corruption.” And the spot is full of darkness.

We’re introduced to a mother who suggests that her daughter sell her meds at high school, and another mother making a poster for Carolyn — with her name spelled incorrectly — because the posters Carolyn’s own mom is putting up are “hideous.”

“As the loneliness and darkness lurking beneath the veneer of everyday life gradually comes to light, a collective awakening seems to overcome the town’s teenage girls — gathering in force until it can no longer be contained,” the film’s synopsis details.

“Signature Move” and “Accidents at Home and How They Happen” are among Reeder’s previous credits.

“Knives and Skin” made its world premiere at this year’s Berlinale and hits theaters and VOD December 6. The film’s ensemble cast includes Kayla Carter (“Chicago Med”), Marika Engelhardt (“Patriot”), Audrey Francis (“Empire”), and Kate Arrington (“Ray Donovan”).
