“What will happen to us?” asks Jasna Đuričić in a new trailer for “Quo Vadis, Aida?” Set in 1995 during the Bosnian War, Jasmila Žbanić’s Oscar-shortlisted drama tells the story of Aida (Đuričić), a translator working for the United Nations in the small town of Srebrenica in the days leading up to the Srebrenica massacre.
Concerned that the Serbian army is getting closer and closer to the town by the hour, Aida is assured by higher-ups that a plan is in place and civilians will be protected in the U.N. camp. And then the fully-armed Serbian army gains entry to the camp. Aida’s own family is among the thousands of civilians seeking safe shelter there, and she quickly realizes that they are in grave danger — and devises a plan to get them out.
“Quo Vadis, Aida?” is shortlisted in the International Feature Film category at the 2021 Oscars. Nominations will be announced March 15. It’s currently screening at the Athena Film Festival, which is digital this year due to COVID-19.
Zbanić won the Berlinale’s Golden Bear for her first feature, “Grbavica: Land of my Dreams.” The story of a mother and daughter trying to survive in war-torn Sarajevo also received AFI Fest’s Grand Jury Prize and picked up two European Film Award nominations. “Love Island,” “For Those Who Can Tell No Tales,” and “On the Path” are among her other other credits.
“Quo Vadis, Aida?” opens at the Angelika Film Center and in virtual cinemas today, March 5, and hits VOD March 15. Žbanić penned its script.
