As children, Paige (Florence Pugh) and Zak (Jack Lowden) were discouraged from playfighting — when they were doing it poorly. The siblings’ parents offered tips about the most effective ways to choke each other out. The tight-knit family depicted in “Fighting with My Family” isn’t particularly aggressive, except when it comes to defending their shared obsession: pro wrestling. Paige and Zak dream of pursuing a career as WWE superstars, and a newly-dropped trailer for the pic sees the sister and brother embarking on a journey that will change their lives forever.
Both Paige and Zak audition for the WWE, but it’s the former who possesses the “skills and the spark” to move ahead in the process. Feeling the pressure to make her family and herself proud, Paige struggles to figure out her identity in the ring. Fortunately, The Rock — played by The Rock himself, Dwayne Johnson — is there to offer her some much-needed advice. He also comes from a wrestling family, and sought to carve his own path. “Don’t worry about being the next me. Be the first you,” he says.
“Little Drummer Girl” and “Lady Macbeth” are among Pugh’s previous credits. She plays Amy in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming adaptation of “Little Women.”
“Fighting with My Family” is currently playing in LA and NY, and opens wide February 22. The pic is inspired by the real story of WWE superstar Paige.
