Esty (Shira Hass, “Broken Mirrors”) refuses to call her Hasidic Jewish community a prison in the trailer for “Unorthodox,” Netflix’s upcoming original series. After all, she was able to leave. Despite never having known anything besides her close-knit, ultra orthodox environment, she flees her marriage and her Williamsburg, Brooklyn home for Berlin. When asked why she decided to go, Esty only says, “God expected too much of me.”
Based on Deborah Feldman’s bestselling memoir of the same name, “Unorthodox” is a four-part limited German series presenting Esty’s life before and after she breaks away from Hasidic Judaism. Per the ultra orthodox lifestyle, she enters into an arranged marriage and is expected to bear children whether she wants to be a mother or not. “Where I come from, there are many rules,” Esty says. “My family just cares that I’m a good wife and mother.” She simultaneously has more and less freedom in Berlin. She can do as she pleases, but she has “no money, no education” — and no family.
“Unorthodox” is directed by Maria Schrader (“Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe”) and written by Anna Winger (“Deutschland 83”) and Alexa Karolinski (“Oma & Bella”). The limited series hits Netflix March 26.
