Trailer Watch: “After Maria,” Three Puerto Rican Women Are Stuck Between Home & Homelessness

"After Maria"

After the devastation Puerto Rico endured during Hurricane Maria, FEMA provided “transitional shelter assistance” to displaced people, and put them up in hotel rooms. Nadia Hallgren’s “After Maria” follows thrree Puerto Rican women who were left homeless after the 2017 hurricane — and then again once FEMA ceased its aid. A trailer for the Netflix short documentary has arrived.

The women of “After Maria” lost their homes in the natural disaster and eventually were placed — and crossed paths — at a hotel in the Bronx. They work, try to rebuild their families’ lives, and dream of going back to Puerto Rico someday. “How do we get out of this city, which is very difficult to live in?” a character asks.

Once the FEMA assistance ends, the question becomes “Now, where?” — these women can’t return home, but they can’t stay in the hotel, either. What are they supposed to do? “That’s what we don’t know,” another subject says.

Hallgren won a Special Jury Award last year for helming “She’s the Ticket,” a docuseries following five women running for office in 2017 and 2018. She’s directed several other shorts and served as DP on projects such as “Motherland” and “Trapped.” She was named a 2018 Chicken & Egg Diversity Fellow.

“After Maria” made its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival last month and hits Netflix May 24.
