Trailer Watch: Alicia Silverstone and Jessica Rothe Revisit “Valley Girl”

"Valley Girl"

After being forced to re-live her brutal death day after day in “Happy Death Day” and “Happy Death Day 2U,” Jessica Rothe is once again traveling back in time in “Valley Girl,” a decidedly less violent trip down memory lane that includes singing and dancing. A trailer for Rachel Lee Goldenberg’s musical remake of the 1983 rom-com just dropped.

The spot kicks off with Julie (Alicia Silverstone) trying to console her daughter (Camila Morrone) after she and her boyfriend break up. Convinced that her mom has “no idea” what she’s going through, the teen is shocked to discover that Julie has more experience and insight than she ever could have imagined. Julie, the titular “Valley Girl,” recalls how one fateful night she traveled “over the hill to Hollywood,” met a guy, and fell for him.

We see a younger version of Julie (Rothe) warned to stay away from Randy (Josh Whitehouse), a punk rocker who runs in different circles. Told he’s “bad news” and not to date “guys like that” by her friends, Julie decides she’s ready for a change and ignores their advice.

Randy’s friends and family seem similarly unimpressed with Julie — they’re convinced that her rich friends and family “are going to hate him.”

“You have this shiny, bright, perfect life — I don’t know how to fit into this,” Randy tells Julie.

Goldenberg’s directing credits include episodes of “Divorce,” “I’m Sorry,” and “Looking for Alaska.”

“Valley Girl” will be available on digital May 8. Amy Talkington (“Little Fires Everywhere”) penned the script.
