For a moment, things seem to be going pretty well for Lucy Fly (Alicia Vikander) in Tokyo. She’s seeing Teiji (Naoki Kobayashi), a photographer, and has just struck up a friendship with another expat, Lily Bridges (Riley Keough). But the fun is short-lived. A trailer for the 1989-set Netflix thriller just dropped.
“She’s a piece of work, that one,” Lucy is warned of Lily. “It’s like you’re the only one who exists, then she moves on to someone else and it’s like you were never even there.” That seems to be Lucy’s situation. She and Lily had grown close, but suddenly Lily prefers spending time with Teiji.
Understandably, this doesn’t sit well with Lucy. “I know what I’m feeling,” she says, “and it’s not right at all.”
The love triangle gets more and more fraught and, eventually, Lily goes missing. And the spot suggests Lucy had something to do with it.
Vikander narrates environmental doc “Anthropocene: The Human Epoch,” in theaters now. Her upcoming projects include Gloria Steinem biopic “The Glorias” and “Tomb Raider 2.” She won an Oscar for her supporting turn in “The Danish Girl.” Her other credits include “Ex Machina,” “Testament of Youth,” and “Euphoria.”
“Under the Silver Lake,” “American Honey,” and “Logan Lucky” are among Keough’s credits. She was nominated for a Golden Globe for her lead performance in Starz series “The Girlfriend Experience.”
“Earthquake Bird” hits select theaters November 1. It will begin streaming on Netflix November 15.
