Trailer Watch: Alison Brie Makes Her Screenwriting Debut with “Horse Girl”

"Horse Girl": Sundance Institute

Alison Brie conquered the squared circle as Zoya the Destroyer and now the “GLOW” star is continuing to flex her muscles behind the scenes. In 2019 Brie made her directing debut on the Netflix wrestling dramedy, and she’s making her screenwriting debut with “Horse Girl,” a drama set to make its world premiere at Sundance next week. A trailer just dropped for the pic, in which the “Mad Men” alumna also stars.

Sarah (Brie) is a socially isolated arts and crafts store employee who spends her spare time at an equestrian center, visiting her mom’s grave, and participating in Zumba classes. Her life takes an unexpected turn when sparks fly with a mutual friend (John Reynolds) of her roommate (Debby Ryan), and then takes an even more unexpected turn when Sarah starts to experience difficulty sleeping and keeps finding herself in places without being able to remember how she got there. Her intense, surreal dreams begin to blur into her reality.

“Do you believe in alien abductions?” Sarah asks in the spot. “People always said that my grandma was so crazy, now I think that she wasn’t crazy at all.” She seems to suspect that her grandma may have lived through something similar to what she’s dealing with.

Convinced that she can “hear the future,” Sarah realizes that she “sounds crazy,” but maintains that what’s happening to her “feels really real.”

Brie will reprise her role as Ruth — AKA Zoya the Destroyer — in “GLOW’s” fourth and final season. No word on a release date yet.

Brie co-wrote “Horse Girl” with the film’s director, Jeff Baena. The pair previously collaborated on “The Little Hours” and “Joshy.” The pic will debut January 27 at Sundance. Brie has two films premiering at the fest. She’s part of the ensemble for Emerald Fennel’s feature debut, “Promising Young Woman,” one of our most anticipated titles at Sundance 2020. The Carey Mulligan-starrer centers on a woman who seeking revenge against the men who have wronged her. “Horse Girl” hits select theaters and Netflix February 7 and “Promising Young Woman” arrives in theaters April 17.
