If any non-actor person were to walk in on an average acting class, they’d probably be really freaked out. The strange exercises that actors do to perfect their craft seem utterly odd to an outsider, and the new trailer for Alison Maclean’s “The Rehearsal” brings the viewer straight into that world.
As the film’s official synopsis reads, director Maclean, “returns to her New Zealand filmmaking roots with a multilayered coming-of-age story about a young actor (James Rolleston) searching for the truth of a character he’s playing onstage and the resulting moral dilemma in his personal life. Set largely in a drama school, featuring Kerry Fox as a diva-like teacher who tries to shape her student’s raw talent, ‘The Rehearsal,’ adapted from the novel by Eleanor Catton, demystifies actors and acting in order to reveal the moments where craft becomes art.”
Maclean is known for directing the award-winning film “Jesus’ Son,” as well as many television episodes for shows like “Gossip Girl,” “The L Word,” “The Tudors,” and “Sex and the City.”
“The Rehearsal” premiered at the New Zealand Film Festival and will mark its U.S. premiere at the New York Film Festival this fall.
