Named in honor of Amaka Igwe, the most successful Nigerian female filmmaker of all-time, “Amaka’s Kin — The Women Of Nollywood” shines a spotlight on women working in a male-dominated field: the film industry in Nigeria. A trailer has been released for the upcoming documentary, directed by Tope Oshin (“Hotel Majestic”).
The spot features a powerful montage of Nigerian women directors introducing themselves, and detailing some of the challenges they face. “I think there’s a lot of backlash against women,” one filmmaker says. Another adds, “The actors won’t respect you. ”
Shadow and Act reports that the doc is also a celebration of Igwem, who was “pivotal to the growth and development of Nollywood and indeed an inspiration to ‘The Women of Nollywood.’”
“Amaka’s Kin — The Women Of Nollywood” includes information and insight from Nollywood directors such as Mildred Okwo, Omoni Oboli, Stephanie Linus, Imhobio Adeola, and Belinda Yanga.
