“Family’s the only thing that means a goddamn thing. You’ll learn that,” says Glenn Close in a new trailer for “Hillbilly Elegy.” Based on J.D. Vance’s bestselling memoir of the same name, the Netflix drama tells the story of three generations of a family. J.D. (Gabriel Basso), a former Marine and current Yale Law student, returns home to his Appalachian family when crisis strikes. While there, he reflects on his volatile relationship with his mother Bev (Amy Adams), a struggling addict who is always claiming that she’ll “do better,” and revisits memories of his grandmother, Mamaw (Close).
“You’ve always got a reason. It’s always somebody else’s fault. At some point you’re going to have to take responsibility, or someone else is going to have to step in,” Mamaw warns Bev. Mamaw herself steps in, and serves as J.D.’s primary caregiver.
The spot shows Mamaw trying to convince J.D. that he’s “got a right” to his own life. She wishes she had done a better job raising his mother, but emphasizes that he’ll determine his own fate. “You gotta decide: do you want to be somebody or not?” she asks.
Adams has received Oscar nods for “Vice,” “American Hustle,” “The Master,” “The Fighter,” “Doubt,” and “Junebug.” Her upcoming film projects include “The Woman in the Window,” a thriller about an agoraphobic woman who witnesses a crime, and “Enchanted” sequel “Disenchanted.”
A seven-time Oscar nominee, Close has been recognized for her work in “The Wife,” “Albert Nobbs,” “Dangerous Liaisons,” “Fatal Attraction,” “The Natural,” “The Big Chill,” and “The World According to Garp.” Her upcoming slate includes a film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Sunset Boulevard” musical.
“Hillbilly Elegy” hits select theaters in November and Netflix November 24. Vanessa Taylor, who scored an Oscar nod for co-writing “The Shape of Water,” penned the adaptation.
