Trailer Watch: Amy Schumer Bashes Beauty Standards in New Teaser for Her HBO Special

Amy Schumer’s incredible year is showing no signs of slowing down. A new trailer has been released for her upcoming stand-up special on HBO, and the premium cable network sure seems confident about both the quality and the inevitable popularity of the special: They’re hyping “Amy Schumer: Live at The Apollo” as “the comedy event of the year.”

The creator/writer/producer/director of “Inside Amy Schumer” gets things rolling with a succinct and hilarious takedown of Hollywood’s hypocrisy. “I wrote a movie,” says Schumer, referring to “Trainwreck.” “They were like, ‘We want you to be in the movie. We just need you to do three things: Just be yourself, have fun and stop eating food.’”

“Live at the Apollo” is in fact Schumer’s second stand-up special, and while her first, “Amy Schumer: Mostly Sex Stuff,” aired on Comedy Central just two years ago, Schumer’s profile has grown astronomically in that time. Case in point: Schumer recently announced her first solo Madison Square Garden show while opening for Madonna at the same venue. “I get to be the first female comic to play @TheGarden June 23rd,” she later tweeted.

During her set warming up the crowd for Madonna, Schumer said that she’s “very proud” of “Trainwreck,” but was confused by a question posed to her repeatedly by the press: “Isn’t it an exciting time for women in Hollywood?” Schumer told the audience, “First of all, I’m from New York; I’ve lived here my whole life. I’ve been in one movie, and I don’t feel like a woman in Hollywood, but I think I can speak for them when I say no.” She proceeded to share how Devin Fabry, the actress who played Schumer’s character as a child in “Trainwreck,” told the comedienne how her cheeks prevented her from getting most jobs. Schumer noted, “In an industry that judges you solely based on your appearance when you know that every day you’re just decomposing, barreling toward death while smaller, younger starlets are popping out? … No, it’s not an exciting time for women in Hollywood.”

“Amy Schumer: Live at the Apollo” will air on HBO October 17 at 10/9c, and Schumer will perform solo at MSG on June 23, 2016.
