Trailer Watch: Amy Schumer’s Love Life is a Hilarious ‘Trainwreck’

We’re great admirers of Comedy Central’s “Inside Amy Schumer,” so we’ve been dying to see “Trainwreck” since the project was first announced. Fortunately for us, and you, the movie is shaping up to be everything we hoped: the trailer is laugh-out-loud funny. Written by Schumer herself, the script is based on her inability to commit.

The first spot for the Judd Apatow-directed flick goes back to Amy’s childhood to portray the root of the problem, when her father forces Amy and her sister to repeat the mantra “Monogamy isn’t realistic.” Fast-forward to the present, 23 years later, and Amy is “a modern chick who does what she wants” — and who she wants, which translates into casual hookups with beefcakes and a whole lotta binge-drinking.

Amy’s world is turned upside down when she’s assigned to write a profile on a doctor, Aaron (Bill Hader), and ends up having sex with him. What makes this situation different is that she actually spends the night with him instead of bowing out early, then receives a call from him the next day — prompting Amy to amusingly assume that he butt-dialed her, and her friend to conclude that he’s “sick or something.”

The trailer is full of the cutting comedy we’ve come to expect from Schumer, taking aim at everything from sanctimonious married couples (“You dress [your husband] like that so nobody else wants to have sex with him? That’s cool”) to passive aggressive compliments (“I like you, Amy. You’re clever but you’re not too brainy. You’re pretty-ish and you’re not gorgeous. You’re approachable,” explains Amy’s boss, played by Tilda Swinton). Brie Larson (“Short Term 12,” “United States of Tara”) co-stars as Amy’s sister.

It’s great to see Apatow teaming up with Schumer. As we’ve said, “One of the biggest impediments to getting more female performers and creators in front of and behind the camera — other than the studios’ bizarre and untrue insistence that male audiences won’t watch a movie about women — is the issue of mentorship. Apatow has proven to be a more generous (or perhaps simply more skilled) mentor to many,” including Lena Dunham. The more Amy Schumer we get behind and in front of the camera, the better.

Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until this summer to watch “Trainwreck,” which opens July 17, but Season 3 of “Inside Amy Schumer” premieres April 21.
