“This is the beginning of my last act. In order to know how to go forward, I’m going to have to know where I’ve been,” says Jane Fonda in the first trailer for “Jane Fonda in Five Acts.” Susan Lacy’s upcoming HBO documentary sees the two-time Oscar winner reflecting on her roots, including growing up as the daughter of famous actor Henry Fonda.
The “Grace and Frankie” star explains that while her family seemed like the American dream, “it was a myth,” and despite finding success in theater and on-screen, she “never felt real.” Her path to finding who she really was led her to activism. “I wanted my life to have meaning,” she explains.
Fonda’s controversial activism during the Vietnam war is addressed head-on. “I’m proud of most of what I did, and I’m very sorry for some of what I did,” she acknowledges. Fonda has also advocated for women’s rights and in 2005 she co-founded the Women’s Media Center.
Check out the trailer to see the “Book Club” actress reflect on why none of her marriages were democratic and how she found her “own narrative.”
“I hope [viewers] will realize that change and growth are possible at any age,” Lacy told us. “It’s never too late to get past the obstacles which get in the way of becoming our best self.”
Lacy most recently directed 2017’s “Spielberg,” an HBO doc about the beloved director.
“Jane Fonda in Five Acts” premiered at Sundance in January and will air on HBO September 24.
