“The most important thing about learning is that you grow,” a quiet film student (Honor Swinton Byrne) is told in a new trailer for Joanna Hogg’s “The Souvenir.” Julie is convinced that she’s “very normal” and there’s nothing special about her. Her first love, Anthony (Tom Burke), seems to prey on her insecurities, lavishing her with compliments so her sense of identity — and confidence — is tied to him. But it looks as though she’ll learn and grow from the dysfunctional relationship — and outgrow her lover in the process.
“I want to not live my life in this very privileged part of the world I come from,” Julie explains. “I want to be really aware about what’s going on around me.” Anthony, on the other hand, seems drawn to Julie’s privilege, and is shown asking her for money. Told by friends that she’s “too nice” and needs to get “properly aggressive” with Anthony about his shady behavior, she confronts him. He suggests Julie stop torturing herself, though she’s simply trying to hold him accountable for his actions. “You’re lost and you’ll always be lost,” he warns.
“The Souvenir” is penned by Hogg and inspired by her own life. “Exhibition,” “Archipelago,” and “Unrelated” are among her previous credits.
A sequel for “The Souvenir” was greenlit before the film made its world premiere at Sundance in January.
“The Souvenir” opens May 17. Tilda Swinton co-stars in the romantic drama.
