Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson use sexism to their advantage in “The Hustle.” A remake of 1998’s “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” the comedy sees the pair teaming up to con men who have wronged them — and are too arrogant to perceive women as a threat. A recently released trailer for the pic shows Hathaway and Wilson’s characters meeting for the time aboard a train. The former is impressed by the latter’s ability to convince a seatmate she’s refraining from ordering food because she’s saving all of her money to save her abducted sister. Touched by her story, he offers to pay for whatever she’d like to eat. Hathaway is delighted with the rouse, and proclaims that they’re “sisters in arms.”
“I had no idea how small-time I was until I met you,” Wilson says, in awe of Hathaway’s ability to score significant amounts of cash and jewelry. Hathaway’s success is no accident. She’s figured out that women make better con artists than men because “men always underestimate us,” and she uses this fact to exploit their weaknesses. “No man will ever believe a woman is smarter than he is,” she explains.
Hathaway can currently be seen in noir thriller “Serenity.” Wilson’s latest, “Isn’t It Romantic,” hits theaters tomorrow, February 13. The pic centers on a cynical architect who finds herself stuck inside a rom-com.
