“In a perfect world, we make perfect choices. In the real world, we make real choices,” says Anne Hathaway in a new trailer for “The Last Thing He Wanted.” Dee Rees’ adaptation of Joan Didion’s 1996 bestselling novel sees the Oscar winner playing a D.C. journalist who finds herself as a subject in the story she’s trying to break.
Described as “the reporter with a moral compass” who is “always a step ahead,” Elena (Hathaway) has spent years investigating Contra activity in Central America. Running an errand for her father lands her in the center of arms deals in the region, transforming the long-time spectator into a pawn in a high-stakes, and potentially lethal, game.
Hathaway won an Oscar for her role in “Les Misérables” and received a nom for “Rachel Getting Married.” “Dark Waters,” “The Hustle,” and “Ocean’s 8” are among her recent credits. Her upcoming slate includes “The Lifeboat,” the story of a shipwreck survivor from “Mustang” writer-director Deniz Gamze Ergüven.
In 2018 Rees made history as the first black woman to receive an Oscar nod for Best Adapted Screenplay. She received the nomination for “Mudbound,” a drama set in post-WWII Mississippi that she also directed. Her other credits include “Bessie” and “Pariah.”
“The Last Thing He Wanted” is one of our most anticipated titles screening at Sundance this year. The political thriller will make its world premiere at the fest on January 27. The pic hits Netflix February 21.
