Melbourne-based musician Courtney Barnett hits the road in “Anonymous Club.” Filmed over three years, the documentary chronicles the ups and downs of the indie rocker’s world tour for her 2018 album, “Tell Me How You Really Feel.” If the new trailer for the film is any indication, Barnett isn’t holding back on her own feelings. “I wake up just having one of those feeling sad days. I think sometimes it’s just OK to feel sad and keep on going with what you’re doing,” she says in the spot.
Asked about writing lyrics that tackle panic attacks and other “touchy territory,” the singer tells a DJ, “I think all of my songs are just trying to figure feelings and situations out.” Later, she reveals that she “can’t quite get in the zone of positivity on this tour.” Barnett explains, “I just turned 30 and I feel like I stepped over some sort of line but I’m still lost.”
Oscilloscope recently landed North American rights to “Anonymous Club” and plans to release the doc theatrically in 2022.
“Whether you know who Courtney Barnett is or not, whether you’re a fan or not, ‘Anonymous Club’ is that rare doc that manages to soar beyond its face-value subject matter and presents a universal, relatable, and even transcendent viewing experience,” said O-Scope’s Dan Berger. “Courtney has a unique ability to articulate what we often feel and can’t say, and [director Danny Cohen] has compiled an enlightening portrait that sends us out on a high that feels revelatory.”
