Trailer Watch: ‘Armor of Light’ Explores the Intersection of Gun Culture and Evangelical Christianity

“Almost two children are killed every week in unintentional shootings,” wrote Reverend Rob Schenck in an USA Today editorial earlier this year. “The presence of a gun in the homes of women and children suffering the scourge of domestic violence makes it five times more likely that the woman will be killed.”

That article was just one of the many fronts in which Schenck, the subject of Abigail Disney’s new documentary “The Armor of Light,” is battling against the gun culture of his evangelical community. As a pro-life activist on abortion issues, he believes that a pro-life position on firearms — though more gun control — is a necessary and urgent political fight.

Documentary producer Disney (“Pray the Devil Back to Hell,”) makes her directorial debut with “The Armor of Light,” which profiles Schenck’s come-to-Jesus moment regarding guns after meeting Lucy McBath, a nurse and single mother whose unarmed son was fatally shot, as well as the reverend’s decades-long efforts to convince his fellow born-again Christians to his side of this divisive issue.

“The Armor of Light” will have its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday, April 18.
