Aubrey Plaza takes her fandom way too far in the first trailer for “Ingrid Goes West.” Best known for portraying deadpan, underwhelmed characters like April Ludgate on “Parks and Recreation,” this time around Plaza plays an overenthusiastic and unhinged Instagram stalker. “I thought she was in an insane asylum,” a mean girl at the grocery store tells a friend on the phone when she spots Plaza’s character from across the aisle. Ingrid is not institutionalized, but she may very well be on a path that gets her arrested.
Following the death of her mother, Ingrid decides to move out West to LA with the hopes of connecting with her Instagram icon, Taylor (Elizabeth Olsen). In order to forge that connection, Ingrid kidnaps Taylor’s dog then returns him to the grateful socialite. The two hit it off — partially because Ingrid so good at stroking Taylor’s ego. “You are by far the coolest, most interesting person I’ve ever met,” Ingrid tells her.
But it looks like it’s only a matter of time until Ingrid’s deception is discovered. The trailer shows Taylor’s brother confronting his sister’s stalker in disguise when he discovers that her phone password is Taylor’s birthday. “I own you,” he threatens.
While the teaser for the film focused on a wedding gone awry, this new spot features much more footage, including a hilarious rendition of K-Ci & JoJo’s “All My Life.”
Plaza currently stars on the critically acclaimed FX comic book adaptation “Legion,” which just wrapped up its first season in March. “The To Do List” and “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates” are among her other credits. Olsen’s credits include “Captain America: Civil War,” “Godzilla,” and “Martha Marcy May Marlene.”
“Ingrid Goes West” premiered at Sundance in January, where it won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award. Directed by Matt Spicer, it opens in theaters August 11.
