“It all started 25 years ago when I saw ‘Thelma & Louise.’ I couldn’t help but wonder how other viewers were reacting,” says director Jennifer Townsend in a trailer for her upcoming documentary, “Catching Sight of Thelma & Louise.” The iconic 1991 pic about best friends who embark on an epic road trip made a major impression on Townsend, and she was convinced it would stir all sorts of emotions in those who saw the trailblazing film led by Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis. To get a better understanding of the film’s impact, she launched a research project, inviting viewers to share their reactions. Decades later, Townsend decided to try to find some of its participants to revisit how they reacted to the Oscar-winning film — and how they feel about it now.
The trailer sees women and men of various ages sounding off on their initial responses to the film, and exploring how times have — or have not — changed since. Topics of conversation include the power of female friendship and the stigma surrounding discussions and depictions of sexual abuse. Townsend also talks to some of the film’s cast.
“Catching Sight of Thelma & Louise” opens in New York on April 5 and in LA April 19.
