Trailer Watch: “Battleground” Goes Inside the Anti-Abortion Movement

"Battleground": Tribeca 2022

Described by director Cynthia Lowen as an “urgently timely window into the intersection of abortion and politics in America,” “Battleground” follows three women who lead anti-abortion organizations as well as those on the front lines fighting in favor of reproductive rights. A new trailer for the doc introduces us to voices from both sides of the issue.

“When you haven’t been paying attention, we’ve been amassing a network that no one else can rival in the country,” says Kristan Hawkins, Founder and President of Students for Life of America. She’s in favor of an America “where abortion is no longer celebrated, accepted, and legal.” Yet the majority of Americans believe abortions should be legal. As Planned Parenthood Action Fund’s Alexis McGill Johnson describes it, “It really is about the tyranny of the minority.”

“As a pro-choice person who unequivocally supports women’s access to abortion, I was genuinely curious about how the anti-abortion movement has been so effective in advancing their goals against the will of the majority,” Lowen told us.

In the wake of the Roe v. Wade overturn this June, a coalition of over 400 women and nonbinary showrunners is pushing to hold studios and media companies accountable for their employees’ healthcare, specifically the support of employees seeking abortions.

Lowen’s other credits include “Bully,” an exploration of America’s bullying crisis, and “Netizens,” an investigation into the harassment women face online.

“Battleground” premiered at Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. You can catch it in theaters October 7 and on VOD October 14.
