Perfectly timed to coincide with the film’s stellar reviews out of SXSW, a red band trailer for “Booksmart” has dropped. Olivia Wilde’s feature directorial debut tells the story of BFFs who are tired of buckling down and determined to let loose on the eve of their high school graduation.
The spot kicks off with Molly (Beanie Feldstein) listening to a guided meditation. “Good morning, winner. Take a deep breath,” a soothing voice advises. “Visualize the mountain of your success and look down on everyone who has ever doubted you. Fuck those losers.”
She and Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) are academic superstars who have devoted all of their time and energy into getting good grades. They’ve both been accepted into good colleges. But so have plenty of their classmates — those who dedicated fewer hours to studying and many more to simply having fun.
“We haven’t done anything. We haven’t broken any rules,” Molly says.
Determined to excel in every aspect of life and keep up with their peers, the pair endeavor to cram four years of fun into one night. They have a new mountain of success to climb. Based on the NSFW trailer, the overachievers are more than up for the task.
“Booksmart” hits theaters May 24.
