“Marriage, babies. these days we wait and wait for everything to align with the stars and it just doesn’t happen,” we’re told in a new trailer for “Rare Beasts.” Billie Piper’s feature directorial debut sees the “Doctor Who” alumna playing an ambitious writer who falls for a traditionalist.
On their first date together, Pete (Leo Bill) tells Mandy (Piper) that he finds women “intolerable.” If that wasn’t enough to sound deafening warning bells, he later reveals that he adores her and predicts that she’ll marry him in a year. So much for waiting for the stars to align. The anti-rom-com follows Mandy and Pete as they strike a deal. “Let’s just say that, if after a year we’re undecided about marriage, then we’ll just part company,” Pete suggests.
“I Hate Suzie,” “Penny Dreadful,” and “Secret Diary of a Call Girl” are among Piper’s on-screen acting credits. She co-created the former. She won an Olivier Award for Best Actress for her role in “Yerma,” a play about a journalist who is desperate to have a child.
Written by Piper, “Rare Beasts” hits select theaters and on demand August 20.
