“I’m gonna do this my way,” says Blake Lively in a new trailer for Reed Morano’s “The Rhythm Section.” The action-packed thriller sees Lively’s grieving process taking a violent turn. By her own account, Stephanie (Lively) has “nothing left” after her family is murdered in a plane crash. The ordinary woman is determined to kill every last person responsible for what happened to them.
Stephanie finds a mentor and trainer (Jude Law) along the way. “Don’t panic,” he tells her. “Be calm. Be still. You gotta get your rhythm section under control. Think of your heart as the drums. Your breathing as the base.”
But mastery over her body is just the beginning of the journey for Stephanie. She’ll need to become someone else, and after her mission is accomplished, she’ll need to live with what she’s done.
“The Rhythm Section” is based on Mark Burnell’s “Stephanie Patrick” book series.
Lively rose to stardom with the “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” movies and “Gossip Girl.” “A Simple Favor,” “All I See Is You,” and “The Shallows” are among her more recent credits.
Morano launched her career as a cinematographer. She won an Emmy for directing “The Handmaid’s Tale” and made her feature directorial debut with Olivia Wilde-starrer “Meadowland.” She most recently helmed “I Think We’re Alone Now,” a post-apocalyptic drama led by Elle Fanning. Morano will step behind the camera for Amazon’s upcoming series adaptation of “The Power,” Naomi Alderman’s novel about a world where teen girls develop the power to harness electricity and shock people at will.
“The Rhythm Section” hits theaters January 31.
