An ER nurse makes extra cash from freshly expired bodies in Brea Grant’s “12 Hour Shift.” A new trailer for the pic, which is set in 1999, introduces us to Mandy (Angela Bettis, “Carrie”), a woman who spends her shifts at an Arkansas hospital caring for patients, snorting pills, and harvesting organs for the black market. She and her cousin (Chloe Farnworth, “Departure”) get in over their heads when a deal goes wrong with a group of dangerous criminals.

“I have always been fascinated by urban legends, particularly the one where a person wakes up in a bathtub full of ice and missing a kidney. I wanted to take that idea and run with it in a setting that I knew well: a small town in the ’90s,” Grant told us. She explained, “When I started writing the film, my goal was to make a female anti-hero. It’s not something we see enough of. We see a lot of male anti-heroes, particularly in the action genre, but rarely do we get to see a woman in that role. Humans have flaws. Women happen to be human. Until we start treating women as humans with flaws in film, I think it’s difficult to have equality on screen. So, I’d like people to walk away with a new definition of what a female lead could look like.”

Grant made her feature directorial debut with 2013’s “Best Friends Forever,” an apocalyptic story about a comic artist and her BFF. Her acting credits include “Heroes,” “Dexter,” and “Eastenders,” and she’s directed an episode of the latter.
