After delving into the dangers of contemporary American motherhood in the documentary The Business of Being Born, producer Ricki Lake is back with another parenting-related feature.
Directed by Dana Ben-Ari, Breastmilk looks much warmer and more celebratory than its predecessor. The documentary follows several families, including those with gay parents and mothers unable to produce milk, to explore the rewards and anxieties of breastfeeding.
Lake is currently working on a new doc about the dangers of hormonal birth control called Sweetening the Pill.
Breastmilk opens May 7 in New York, May 16 in LA, and will expand across the summer.
As a side note, if you’re interested in reading about breasts from an all-encompassing (medical, scientific, anthropological, and aesthetic) perspective, I highly recommend Florence Williams’ Breasts: A Natural and Unnatural History.
