Trailer Watch: Bridey Elliott’s Family Is Haunted in “Clara’s Ghost”

"Clara's Ghost": Sundance Institute

Bridey Elliott’s debut feature is a family affair. “Clara’s Ghost” sees the writer-director casting her own family to tell the unusual story of the Reynolds clan. A new trailer for the comedy kicks off with the family’s matriarch, Clara (Paula Niedert Elliott), asking about the woman who used to live in the Reynolds’ new house. She’s told that the former owner was “crazy” and “sent to a mental institution.” So it’s probably a bad sign that Clara starts seeing the woman (Isidora Goreshter) everywhere she goes.

“Fed up with constant ribbing from her self-absorbed showbiz family, [Clara] finds solace in and guidance from the supernatural force she believes is haunting her,” the film’s synopsis hints. But it looks like Clara’s new BFF is far from harmless — the spot sees the ghost provoking Clara, causing her to have outbursts, and things escalate from there.

Bridey Elliott plays one of Clara’s daughters in the pic. The “Fort Tilden” actress told us, “I wrote it about my family and they play themselves in some sense. I was inspired by the tone of ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,’ and the setting of ‘Let’s Scare Jessica to Death,’ the result being a family comedy/drama with a supernatural element. I like to think of this movie as an experiment and a time capsule,” she explained. “I’ve worked with each member of my family creatively, but never with all of us in one project, and nothing so personal.”

“Clara’s Ghost” premiered at Sundance in January and hits theaters December 6 and VOD December 7.
