Trailer Watch: British Princesses Let Loose and Celebrate the End of WWII in ‘A Royal Night Out’

When victory over the Germans is announced on VE Day, all of England comes together — including Princesses Elizabeth (Sarah Gadon,”The Amazing Spider-Man 2") and Margaret (Bel Powley, “The Diary of a Teenage Girl”), who are desperate to join in the fun.

In “A Royal Night Out,” thee sisters are adamant that they should be able to go out “into the crowd” because they have as much a right to toast the end of World War II as anyone else. They long to be among the people, and after some deliberation, they are granted permission — this may, after all, be the only chance they get to experience this kind of freedom before Elizabeth is named the Queen of England.

“We’re going out incognito!” shouts an excited Margaret. She’s so eager to leave the palace that she has to be reminded to take off her tiara — a rather compromising accessory when one is trying to conceal her royal heritage.

The duo are saddled with chaperones, but it’s not long before Elizabeth and Margaret ditch their supervisors — and lose track of each other. So the sisters go off in different directions, each embarking on an adventure of a lifetime, complete with dancing, fisticuffs, romance and gambling.

Powley just scored a win at the Gotham Awards for her performance in “The Diary of a Teenage Girl.”

“A Royal Night Out” opens in theaters today. Emily Watson co-stars.
