Trailer Watch: Cate Blanchett Is a Conductor in Crisis in “Tár”

"Tár"

A trailer has arrived for Cate Blanchett’s latest awards contender. The seven-time Oscar nominee and two-time winner toplines “Tár,” the story of a trailblazing conductor who appears to be on the verge of a breakdown. “Lydia Tár is many things,” we’re told in the spot. One of only fifteen EGOT winners, the revered maestro has written music for the stage and the screen, achieving worldwide fame. Inwardly, though, she’s crumbling.

When we’re introduced to Lydia, she’s struggling to write and to exist in the world — she’s fixating on noise, haunted by ordinary, everyday sounds like footsteps and knocks on doors. “She’s starting to disappear into herself,” we’re warned. Cue an impassioned speech by Lydia about the need to “sublimate yourself, your ego, and yes, your identity” to “stand in front of the public and God and obliterate yourself.”

Blanchett won Oscars for “Blue Jasmine” and “The Aviator.”  “Don’t Look Up” and “Nightmare Alley” are among her most recent credits.

“Tár” hits select theaters October 7 and expands nationwide October 28.
