“I’m sad for you, little girl. You’re just as imprisoned as I am,” says prisoner Ben (Corey Stoll, “House of Cards”) to his grown-up baby sister Libby (Charlize Theron) in the trailer for “Dark Places,” the latest adaptation of “Gone Girl” author and screenwriter Gillian Flynn’s oeuvre.
Ben is behind bars after being convicted of killing nearly all of his and Libby’s family. Libby escaped the violence, but never really left it behind. She can’t truly move on — especially not now, when she has to deal with a secret society intent on resurrecting the case. The Kill Club, comprised of ex-cops and private investigators, is convinced that Ben isn’t responsible for the mass murder and are determined to use Libby to prove that everything she knows about her one remaining family member is wrong.
Theron produces, while Chloe Grace Moretz and Christina Hendricks co-star. “Dark Places” opens August 7.
