Charlize Theron is kicking ass again. The “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Atomic Blonde” actress leads a covert group of mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die in “The Old Guard.” A new trailer for the Gina Prince-Bythewood pic sees the Oscar winner welcoming a newcomer to their folds.
“You’ve got questions, kid, I get it,” Andy (Theron) tells Nile (KiKi Layne, “If Beale Street Could Talk”), her latest recruit, after she escapes from the trunk she’s being held captive in. Nile isn’t willing to wait for answers — she stabs Andy. What would fatally wound someone else registers as a mere annoyance for Andy. She and her crew met way back in the Crusades and have since fought thousands of battles side by side, dying countless times in the process.
It’s no wonder that Nile begins to think that they “never really die.” “Nothing that lives lives forever,” Andy explains. “One day your wounds just don’t heal up anymore. We don’t know when.”
Nile has major reservations about joining Andy’s group. “I can’t do this,” she insists. “I’ve got people that love me.” But the mercenaries need her to “help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary,” the pic’s synopsis details.
“Beyond the Lights,” “The Secret Life of Bees,” and “Love & Basketball” are among Prince-Bythewood’s other features. She’s joining the Girls Club, a community for women creatives, culture-changers, and storytellers, to discuss “The Old Guard” on Tuesday, July 7, at 3 p.m. EST. You can find out more information about the event here.
“The Old Guard” drops on Netflix July 10.
