Charlize Theron leads a group of soldiers with an extremely rare skill set in a new trailer for “The Old Guard.” “Let’s just say we’re very hard to kill,” she tells their newest recruit. The graphic novel adaptation sees the Oscar winner playing Andy, a warrior who, along with her covert group of mercenaries, has protected the mortal world for centuries thanks to their mysterious inability to die. Now she’s welcoming Nile (KiKi Layne) into the tight-knit crew, and the newbie has lots of questions — including whether they are “good guys or bad guys.” “It depends on the century,” Nile’s told.
“We don’t have all the answers,” Andy admits, “but we do have purpose.” Their unique abilities don’t just give them a sense of purpose — they also put them at risk. The spot hints that someone is trying to lock the soldiers up, weaponize them, and unlock their genetic code.
Theron won an Oscar for “Monster” and received nods for 2005’s “North Country” and her latest pic, “Bombshell.” “Long Shot” and “Tully” are among her other recent credits.
Layne’s credits include “If Beale Street Could Talk” and “Native Son.”
Gina Prince-Bythewood directed “The Old Guard.” “Beyond the Lights,” “The Secret Life of Bees,” and “Love & Basketball” are among her feature credits. “Representation matters,” she’s said. “It matters to us on a deep, molecular level. When we watch ourselves on screen being heroic, or desired, or brilliant, or in love, we can see that for ourselves. And the world sees that in us.”
