“This is America, sir. Every man with a pulse has enemies,” says Chloë Sevigny in the first trailer for “Lizzie.” The drama is based on Lizzie Borden, who has been immortalized for her alleged role in the 1892 ax murders of her father and stepmother. The spot kicks off with Lizzie (Sevigny) being questioned by the police, and asked whether her father had any enemies. The ensuing footage hints that his greatest enemy is Lizzie herself.
Long resigned to her lonely existence, Lizzie’s world changes overnight when she’s introduced to Bridget (Kristen Stewart), her family’s new housemaid. But Lizzie’s not the only one drawn to Bridget. Her father is shown harassing and assaulting his employee.
Lizzie and Bridget fall in love, and resolve to end Lizzie’s father’s reign of terror.
The pic premiered at Sundance in January.
Sevigny received an Oscar nod in 2002 for “Boys Don’t Cry.” “Bloodline,” “Beatriz at Dinner,” and “Love & Friendship” are among her recent credits.
Since the “Twilight” franchise, Stewart’s films have included “Snow White and the Huntsman,” “Still Alice,” and “Clouds of Sils Maria.” She’ll topline Elizabeth Banks’ upcoming “Charlie’s Angels” reboot.
“Lizzie” opens September 14.
