Trailer Watch: Clea DuVall’s “The Intervention” is the New Millennium’s “The Big Chill”

“The Intervention”

First-time feature film director Clea DuVall has taken some of your favorite TV actors, put them in a blender, and created the amazing ensemble cast that makes up “The Intervention.” In the grand tradition of adult comedies taking place over what is supposed to be a fun summer weekend, “The Intervention” looks to get just as tense, hilarious, and intelligent as its predecessors like “The Big Chill” and “Dan in Real Life.”

In the new trailer for the film, Melanie Lynskey (“Togetherness”), Cobie Smulders (“How I Met Your Mother”), Natasha Lyonne (“Orange is the New Black”), Alia Shawkat (“Arrested Development”), Vincent Piazza (“Boardwalk Empire”), Jason Ritter (“Parenthood”), and Ben Schwartz (“Parks and Recreation”) come together for a long weekend, but as the official synopsis points out, the scheme is a bit more complicated:

“A weekend getaway for four couples takes a sharp turn when one of the couples discovers the entire trip was orchestrated to host an intervention on their marriage. Control freak bride-to-be Annie (Lynskey) gathers her group of thirtysomething friends at the picturesque Savannah family summer home of sisters Jessie (DuVall) and Ruby (Smulders) to convince Ruby and her workaholic husband Peter (Piazza), that their relationship has turned irreparably toxic. Joined by Annie’s easygoing fiancé (Ritter), Jessie’s partner Sarah (Lyonne), as well as the reluctant Jack (Schwartz) and his sprightly 22-year-old girlfriend (Shawkat), the group makes fumbling attempts to jump-start the intervention throughout the booze-fueled weekend, while resolutely avoiding dealing with their own vices and regrets.”

Known for acting in films like “Girl, Interrupted,” “Zodiac,” and “Argo, DuVall wrote and directed “The Intervention,” which premiered at Sundance earlier this year. Sara Quin of pop duo Tegan and Sara scored the film. It opens on August 26.
